Perhaps the first question that comes to mind when someone is introduced to numerology is how does it work? The next question is usually what are my numbers? There are four primary numbers that numerologists use when doing the basic natal chart.
The most common starting point for numerological interpretation starts by taking the full name at birth and breaking it down into three divisions. Along with the person’s name, the date of birth is given initial consideration. These four combinations of numbers form the matrix of the primary numerology chart.
Every author of numerology has his/her own terminology and procedure for interpreting the meaning of the name. All of them work with the vowels separately, the consonants separately, and the two combined. Different authors use different terminologies once they have separated the letters into these three groupings. Sometimes new students become confused by these differences in terminology.
Because of my background in psychology and as a therapist, I chose to introduce an entirely new nomenclature to the interpretation of numbers. For the interpretation of the name I use the personality number (consonants), the soul number (vowels) and the number of the integrated self (total name).
The Consonants (Personality Number)
When the term “personality” is mentioned in this volume, I am referring to the little self which each of us uses for manifesting in this life sojourn. The personality is composed from the synthesis of activity expressed through the vehicles of the lower self: physical, etheric, astral (emotional), and mental (intellectual) bodies.
The personality number is a focal point through which you express yourself in the daily world of events. The personality number indicates the primary lessons the individual is focusing upon during this life. It is the exterior part of your behavior most readily seen in the exchanges of everyday life. It gives insight into our potential, shortcomings, strengths and abilities. It does not attempt to describe the entire personality. Rather, it indicates the primary lessons and attributes of self you have chosen to concentrate upon in this lifetime. The personality number is similar to the rising sign in astrology. It reveals how you function socially and reveals much about your exterior behavior.
The personality number is derived from the totaling of numbers from consonants in the full name at birth. Each of those separate numbers is present and influences the total. In a sense it is similar to your astrology chart; your sun sign may be one sign while the moon sign is different. Each one is quite important when interpreting the chart. However, all the energies of the solar system (planetary and zodiacal) are present. The energy flows through focal points, such as sun sign, moon sign, or the planets according to their placement and angle of relationship.
In numerology many numbers are present, and each one should be considered. However, to start with we study the focal points of concentrated vibrational intensity. Numbers are static symbols of the angles and degrees of consciousness, and act similar to switching stations of energy by directing and transferring different rays of subtle energies throughout all creation. They could be seen at times as an analogy to the on and off variables that operate within the computer processor.
(Author’s Note) When exploring personality traits it is important to note that our personality is made up of who we are and how we relate to the world in which we live. Once you have become familiarized with the workings of numerology it is easyto see that there are many similarities between the personality number and the life. When it seems to be the right moment for you, you might want to take a look. For example, if your personality number is five, you might want to take a peek at the five life number some time to get a different perspective about a similar set of circumstances.

The Vowels (Soul Number)
The soul is the ongoing inner part of our being which holds the memory of all of our life journeys. That may include upon other planets and dimensions as well as here on earth. The soul seeks further evolution through the vehicles of the personality by entering into the physical body. It strives for balance and completion of earth experience, so that it may evolve into yet other dimensions or planetary systems of evolution. The soul is neither the higher self nor the spark of our divinity. The soul is the accumulation of experience and is learning the lessons of evolution just as the personality is learning is learning from this life time.
The soul number reveals the particular vibration the soul stresses through the personality in this lifetime. It is the energy pattern that the soul (in conjunction with Higher Self) foresees as most appropriate for accomplishing the determined growth lessons during this lifetime. The soul possesses knowledge of all the vibrations, yet focuses its fund of wisdom to accelerate this vibrational pattern for the benefit of its progression.
The soul is not the higher self or divine spark. It is the accumulation of experience through numerous personalities over eons of evolution. The soul is also learning and adding to the pool of experience. The soul number gives a clue as to the primary lessons and energies it has chosen to accomplish. It tells us what is going on inside the deeper dimensions of the individual. For most of us at this time in evolution the soul purpose is not seen clearly because it is distorted passing through the ego and dysfunctions of the human personality. As we go about cleansing and transforming the personality, the soul energy becomes more pure and refined.

The Complete Name (Integrated Self)
The number of the integrated self indicates what personal growth the individual aspires to attain during this lifetime. Few people throughout history have reached their full growth potential for enlightened living. Enlightenment is a manifestation of the individualized expression of higher Self and living in harmony with the inner dance of our permanent atom. This results when the soul and personally function together in full harmony. The influence of the integrated self number remains largely dormant until a high degree of integration is reached. Its expression projects outward through the personality in distorted fashion until the individual has attained an enhanced level of cleansing leading to the integration of personality and soul. Until an individual reaches a relatively healthy integration, the behavior pattern of this number would be more similar to that of the personality number.
When interpreting a chart, always remember there is much more than just reading different sections of the book for each numerical description. The full chart should be intuitively linked after an examination of the parts. Then you can look at the parts again with a better grasp and appreciation of all therein. In working with this chapter particularly, remember that the soul number comes through the personality. The integrated self qualities also are manifesting through the personality and soul. Thus, it can be distorted by ego and negative personality traits.
As human beings we all have certain problems, neurosis, blocks, and dysfunctional patterns. Most people who are attracted into the self-awareness movement are working consciously to recognize and release negative dysfunctional behavior. As the personality becomes relatively clear and healthy, the soul can manifest through it more cleanly. Then the individual reaches toward a state of integration and consistent well-being.

The Date of Birth (Life Path-Life Number)
The date of birth (month, day, and year) provides one of the four most significant calculations while interpreting the natal chart. From this number you can determine the life number. The life number yields insight into the reoccurring lessons the individual will attract into his/her life experience. This number provides insight as to how that person will likely react to the circumstances life offers.
The life number provides a clue as to what fate has in store. It reveals to us the particular lessons that will most likely be repeated until they are learned and integrated into the soul memory. Proper utilization of numerological information can provide guidelines and help the individual adjust more easily to the lessons of life.
If you take conscious responsibility for your potential, you can better understand yourself and considerably accelerate the learning curve of life. With understanding comes the foundation upon which effective actions are based. Right action releases us from the wheel of karma and rebirth, furthering the evolution of soul. We can continue our journey onto higher spirals and planes of existence.
It is my personal belief that the date of birth is determined by the soul (and higher self) of the incoming child. Every mother has the experience of knowing that when the child is ready, birth occurs. It seems only proper that the soul does the choosing because the life number indicates the type of opportunities, challenges, and destiny that life experience will bring to assist experiential evolution. It is not necessary for the reader to accept this belief in order to appreciate the meaning of numbers. Whatever the process of selection, it is the birth date that does give definition to the life pattern. How to calculate your own numbers will be answered at this time.

I think of the above four indicators as making up essentially the natal chart. These influences are a continuing underlying influence throughout your life. As you change your name during the course of life you change the frequency of the moment, and I give these changes a different nomenclature.
